Why Historic Texas

Historic Texas gathers county histories, town origins, cemetery records, old photos, postcards and maps into one place. Most of it comes from state historical markers, census returns, county histories and material contributed by the people who live there.

How the archive is built

Each county page starts with founding records and courthouse history, then grows as towns, communities and burial grounds are added. Vanished settlements get the same treatment as county seats, because they are usually the hardest to find anywhere else.

Using the records

Browse by county to see everything inside one set of county lines, or go straight to a town by name. Corrections and photographs are welcome, and every submission is checked before it goes up.
